Milo got in trouble last week for tearing a hole in my wife’s brand new top from Express. She hadn’t even had a chance to wear it yet. But don’t worry she can’t stay mad at her ‘baby’ for very long.
I’m not sure why but the old American Express commercial where a lady is walking on a pier at the shore and her hat blows off into the ocean has always stuck in my head as a reminder of American Express purchase protection benefit.
Luckily my wife used her American Express Aspire card for the last month and has been putting all of here spending on it to earn Hilton points so we can book the last night at the Conrad Maldives.
American Express’s Purchase Protection Benefit
After logging into the Amex website, I clicked on ‘Benefits’ and scrolled down to the Purchase Protection benefit.
The Purchase Protection is an embedded benefit of your Card Membership and requires no enrollment. It can help protect eligible purchases made on your Card against accidental damage or theft, for up to 120 days from the date of purchase.
Of course there is fine print with exclusions and restrictions. Let’s see how easy it is to use.
Filing a Claim
You can call 1-800-322-1277 to start a claim, but I clicked on the ‘File A Claim’ button instead.
The online claim process is handled directly on American Express’s website instead of a 3rd Party. Filing the claim was very easy – with questions such as:
- date of loss
- personal information
- information on the item of the claim – clothing, electronics, etc along with model #s, serials #s, etc.
- purchase date along with cost (including tax but excluding shipping)
- description of what happened along with where it occurred
I had a photo of the damaged top and a copy of the receipt ready but the claim form never asked for it so I just kept it handy thinking they would ask me to send it later.
The Response
The next day I received an email with the outcome of my claim – it was approved and they credited my wife’s account for the $53.38!
Need to Knows
I was shocked how easy and quick American Express makes using their Purchase Protection benefit. Don’t forget to use this benefit if your purchase is accidentally damaged or stolen within 120 days of purchase.
