Hopefully you have applied, been approved, and are using your new American Express SPG card with it’s highest ever signup bonus of 35,000 pts. If so, you might be getting nervous about spending the $8,000 requirement in 6 months. Here is a site I use that has been helpful to pay bills that don’t accept credit cards.
Plastiq.com is a site that will process a credit card payment for you and make payments on your behalf. They tout that you can pay any bill with any card in any amount.
Meet Spending Requirements
This service comes in handy for bills that don’t accept credit cards directly – most mortgages and rent along with car payments and contractors. This can come in handy if you are going to be short on meeting that American Express SPG $8,000 spending requirement.
There is a fee to use this service and fee varies by type of credit card used. But Plastiq typically runs promotion that will lower the fee for using certain credit card types. I got in on a 1.75% Mastercard fee last year for paying rent & mortgages.
The Points Angle
I personally use it to pay my mortgage each month just for the points. My Citi AT&T Access More card provides 3X points for online purchases so even though my $3000/month payment incurs a $52.50 fee (1.75%), it earns me 9157 Citi Thank You points. Therefore, each Citi Thank You point is costing me $0.006 or 6/10ths of one cent ($52.50 fee paid / 9157 points earned)
What can you do with Thank You points? Here’s an example – Singapore Airlines is a transfer partner of Citi Thank You points. Singapore is a Star Alliance Member along with United Airlines. So when using my Singapore miles, I can use them on United flights.
If I transfer 17,500 Citi Thank You points to Singapore Krisflyer miles – that is enough points for a one way flight from Washington DC to Hawaii. And remember those 17,500 miles cost me $100.33 (17,500 x $0.0057). $100 for a ticket from anywhere in the US to Hawaii on United Airlines – that’s a great deal!
